March’s Unexpected Snowstorm Shuts Down Roads, Highlights Anchorage’s Winter Resilience
A historic late-season snowstorm blanketed Anchorage and surrounding areas last night, bringing nearly a foot of snow and forcing road closures, school cancellations, and a temporary pause on outdoor adventures – a stark reminder of the powerful forces shaping our Alaskan landscape. The storm, which began around 10 PM, quickly intensified, impacting everything from the Ship Creek waterfront to the trails in Chugiak State Park.
The Anchorage Police Department reported numerous accidents and slowdowns across the city, particularly on the Glenn Highway and the Seward Highway. Several low-lying areas, including parts of East Anchorage and near the University, experienced localized flooding due to rapidly melting snow. While the heaviest snowfall has subsided, travel remains hazardous and crews are working diligently to clear roadways and restore power to affected areas. The National Weather Service issued a blizzard warning that expired this morning, but officials are urging residents to remain cautious.
