Anchorage Community Safety: M6.2 Earthquake Near Alaska

The recent magnitude 6.2 earthquake near Alaska has understandably caused concern within the Anchorage community. While the quake was felt strongly, thankfully, initial reports indicate limited significant damage. However, preparedness is key, and now is the time to review safety measures to protect yourself and your family.

Building Safety – Before the Shaking:

Your home’s structure is your first line of defense. Ensure you have a home earthquake preparedness kit, including water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, a battery-powered radio, and a first-aid kit. Secure heavy furniture, appliances, and TVs to walls using straps or brackets. Consider earthquake reinforcement kits for older homes – these can significantly improve stability. Don’t store breakable items on high shelves.

Emergency Preparedness for Families:

Discuss a family emergency plan. Designate a meeting point outside your home in case you’re separated. Identify a family contact person outside of Anchorage who everyone can check in with. Teach children how to β€œDrop, Cover, and Hold On” – this is the most effective response during shaking. Practice drills regularly.

During the Earthquake:

* **Drop, Cover, and Hold On:** Immediately drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy table or desk, and hold on until the shaking stops.
* **Stay Indoors:** If you’re outside, move to an open area away from buildings, trees, and power lines.
* **Don’t Use Elevators:** Elevators can malfunction during an earthquake.
* **Stay Calm:** Panic can lead to poor decisions.

After the Earthquake:

* **Check for Injuries:** Assess yourself and others for injuries. Provide first aid if needed.
* **Be Aware of Aftershocks:** Aftershocks are common and can be strong. Continue to β€œDrop, Cover, and Hold On” during aftershocks.
* **Check for Hazards:** Inspect your home for damage – gas leaks, broken water pipes, and structural issues. If you smell gas, evacuate immediately and report it to the authorities.
* **Stay Informed:** Monitor local news and official channels for updates and instructions. You can find real-time data and information here: https://anchoragelist.com/alaska-earthquakes/
