Anchorage residents, are you concerned about the quality of education in our city? A passionate former Anchorage teacher is urging us to take action, and itβs more important now than ever.
Beth Kemp, a kindergarten and first-grade teacher who spent 13 years in Anchorage schools, recently shared her story and a critical plea for support regarding Propositions 9 and 1. Kemp, who left the profession in 2022 due to the lack of a teacher pension system in Alaska, witnessed firsthand the challenges facing educators and students. As a substitute and volunteer, she continues to see the dedication of Anchorage teachers, who are often juggling large class sizes and limited resources. She described classrooms with as many as 28 students, highlighting the difficulty teachers face in providing individualized attention and truly engaging with each child.
This isnβt just about numbers; itβs about the future of Anchorage. Smaller class sizes directly impact a teacherβs ability to connect with students, tailor instruction to individual needs, and foster a supportive learning environment. Proposition 9 specifically allocates $11.8 million to protect approximately 90 teaching positions within the Anchorage School District. This funding would allow the district to maintain crucial staffing levels, particularly in elementary schools where the impact of larger class sizes is most keenly felt. Prop 1, closely linked to Prop 9, aims to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff by maintaining adequate school staffing.
Youβll likely see the effects of these propositions in neighborhoods like East Anchorage, Eagle River, and Girdwood, where many of our schools are experiencing growth. Local businesses that rely on a strong education system, such as tutoring centers and after-school programs, will also benefit from a more stable and supported educational environment. Itβs a ripple effect that touches the entire community.
Anchorage residents, this is your chance to invest in our childrenβs future. Both Propositions 9 and 1 are on the ballot and offer a tangible way to support our dedicated teachers and ensure a brighter future for Alaskaβs students. We encourage you to learn more about these propositions and cast your vote on election day. You can find more information on the Anchorage School District website and through the Alaska Division of Elections.
