Anchorage residents, winter in Southcentral Alaska is a cherished time, and for many of you, itโ€™s inextricably linked to the local ski hills. But these vital community resources are facing increasing challenges, and thankfully, dedicated stewards are stepping up to ensure these slopes remain accessible for generations to come.

Recently, the team at Hilltop, Arctic Valley, and Skeetawk ski areas โ€“ a trio of not-for-profit hills nestled in the Anchorage Bowl โ€“ highlighted their ongoing efforts to preserve access to snow sports. These hills arenโ€™t about massive profits; theyโ€™re about providing affordable opportunities for families to learn and enjoy the sport thatโ€™s become a cornerstone of our Alaskan winter lifestyle. With lift tickets often under $100, theyโ€™re a crucial alternative to the larger, more expensive resorts.

This work is incredibly important for Anchorage residents. These smaller hills offer a unique, family-friendly atmosphere, and theyโ€™re often where many of us first learned to ski or snowboard. They provide a vital recreational outlet, fostering a sense of community and connection โ€“ as Hilltopโ€™s community development manager, Robert DeBerry, aptly put it, โ€œYou can go almost anywhere in Anchorage, throw a rock in a crowd and hit somebody that has a Hilltop story.โ€ The hills also play a role in introducing young people to outdoor activities, instilling a love for the Alaskan wilderness.

The volunteers and staff at these hills are more than just lift operators and instructors; theyโ€™re passionate advocates for keeping the spirit of skiing and snowboarding alive in our region. Kurt Meehleis, a snowboard instructor with 30 years of experience at Hilltop, embodies this dedication. Heโ€™s not just teaching techniques; heโ€™s building confidence and fostering a lifelong love of the sport. As he shared, โ€œEvery lesson should be unique,โ€ reflecting the personalized approach these stewards take to ensure each studentโ€™s success.

Last weekend, a glimpse into the Hilltop experience revealed a vibrant scene โ€“ families enjoying lessons, skiers carving down the slopes, and even Finn, the beloved golden retriever who lends his name to the on-site restaurant, wandering through the lodge. Itโ€™s a testament to the enduring appeal of these local gems. If youโ€™re looking for a fun, affordable way to embrace the Alaskan winter, consider visiting one of these cherished ski hills. You might just find yourself part of a Hilltop story.
