Anchorage Residents, Let’s Spruce Up Our City – It’s Time for the Annual Citywide Cleanup!
As the snow finally melts and the wildflowers begin to peek through the hills around Anchorage, it’s time for our community to roll up our sleeves and tackle a vital task: keeping our city beautiful. The Anchorage Chamber’s Citywide Cleanup kicks off this Saturday, May 2nd, and continues through May 31st, offering a fantastic opportunity for all Anchorage residents to contribute to a cleaner, healthier community.
What This Means for Anchorage
This annual event is more than just picking up trash; it’s about preserving the natural beauty of our city – from the trails of Chugach State Park near Eklutna to the shores of Ship Creek. Keeping our streets, parks, and waterways free of litter protects wildlife, enhances our neighborhoods, and reflects positively on Anchorage as a welcoming place to live and visit. For many Alaskans, particularly those who rely on subsistence fishing and hunting, a clean environment is crucial for maintaining traditional ways of life and ensuring access to healthy resources.
Local Context
Anchorage’s unique location – nestled between the towering Chugach Mountains and the vast expanse of Cook Inlet – presents both incredible beauty and significant environmental challenges. Our reliance on outdoor recreation, from hiking and biking along the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail to fishing in Turnagain Arm, means we need to be diligent stewards of our natural resources. Alaska Native communities have a deep connection to the land and waterways, and maintaining a clean environment is a core value reflected in their traditions and culture. Furthermore, our military presence adds to the logistical demands of waste management, making community involvement even more important.
What to Know
Starting this Saturday, orange trash bags are readily available at locations like Carrs, Kaladi Brothers, and the Anchorage Chamber office. Remember to wear thick gloves, a high-visibility vest if working near roads, and a sturdy container for sharps. Respect private property boundaries and, while we appreciate the efforts of those experiencing homelessness, the Chamber advises against participating in encampments. You can drop off your filled bags at the Eagle River landfill, the Midtown Central Transfer Station, or Alaska Premier Auctions & Appraisals. Don’t forget to check the Chamber’s online map for updated bag pickup locations!
The kickoff event at Westchester Lagoon on Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. will provide supplies and recycling options. Other opportunities include the Cheney Lake Park Community Clean Up (May 2nd, 10 a.m. – noon) and the Anchorage School District’s Super Sweeper Saturday (May 9th, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.). The Ship Creek Spring Cleanup is scheduled for May 9th from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., meeting at the Bait Shack.
Let’s work together to make Anchorage shine!
